29th, 30th June and 1st July Collagraph and Carborundum with Fiona Thomas and Rita Kearton
Fiona's approach to collagraph is of an abstract nature, cutting linear shapes and building subtle layers of ink on the surface, creating a harmonious luminosity of colour applying carborundum to create more density. Rita was a demonstrator at Art in Action 2005. Her work is currently exhibited at Byard Gallery Cambridge. Her approach is to play with a wide range of media, including cut card and applied textures, to produce figurative works of imagination.

Cost: £ 185, including materials, lunch and refreshments.
Time: 11am - 5pm each day with an hour for lunch.

Open Studios one day taster courses
27th July Screenprinting Basics with James Hill
Paper cut stencils, resist methods and blue filler. To get you started with as little technology as possible to produce vivid designs in simple and eye catching compositions.
28th July Drypoint with James Hill
James will be sharing some of his secrets on dry-point printing. This technique of drawing directly onto the plate using a carbon steel point (dry-point needle), can form soft subtle lines to velvety dark lines created by burrs that hold the ink, or energetic aggressive lines that can make dry-point a characterful and expressive medium.
29th July Etching with James Hill
Covering deep bite, hard ground, soft ground and the basics of wiping plates quickly or even blind with no ink, making use of the textural nature of the medium.
Taster courses cost £ 60 each, including materials, lunch and refreshments.
Time: 10am - 4pm each day with an hour for lunch.

3rd, 4th, 5th August Monoprinting with Kip Gresham and James Hill
This course, extremely popular over the years, will again be a general monoprinting course using screen, etching and relief printing presses. This will be a chance to work with master printmakers who print for numerous well-known artists. James Hill and Kip Gresham's knowledge is boundless and will set you on an exciting roller coaster of possibilities.

Cost: £ 185, including materials, lunch and refreshments.
Time: 10am - 4pm each day with an hour for lunch.

8th, 9th, 10th August Photo-etching and toyobo plate with Martyn Grimmer and James Hill
This will be the third time Martyn Grimmer has taught at St Barnabas Press. Previous courses have been a resounding success and a source of great inspiration. Martyn is the technical adviser and tutor at Spike Island Printmakers in Bristol, and at Bath University.

The photo-plate (Toyobo Print Tight) that he has been researching will be used in the course. There will be the chance to use photographic imagery and hand-made/autographic techniques in your creations. This substrate is almost like black and white photography the results are so good. James will be showing the use of photo copper (hydrocoat) plate etched in ferric chloride, which allows you to etch the plate with more traditional etching methods such as aquatint, sugar lift and soft ground, modifying the image still further.

Cost: £ 185, including materials, lunch and refreshments.
Time: 10am - 4pm each day with an hour for lunch.

11th, 12th, 13th August Relief Printing with He Kun and James Hill
He Kun and James will be teaching traditional western and eastern relief printing methods. Our friend He Kun from China has been here at St Barnabas Press before: this will be his fourth visit. Using oil based inks and water based inks, He Kun and James will be discussing the many different approaches that are used in this most sophisticated form of printing, when one has managed to move on from the preconceived ideas of simple one colour relief printing. James's recent tour of China visiting the artists who use these methods has been very enlightening, and has brought more approaches to the subject than was first expected, some that are similar to the Japanese style of wood block printing. He Kun has a very bright and luscious style that makes his prints look almost like paintings.
Cost: £ 185, including materials, lunch and refreshments.
Time: 10am - 4pm each day with an hour for lunch.

17th, 18th, 19th August Screenprinting using photo processes with James Hill
Photo-process screenprinting has many possibilities. Imagery can range from flat surfaces of pure colour, to bold charcoal and graphite drawings, to soft transparent watercolour washes. Working directly onto true-grain (a clear grained film) or using Photoshop separations of photographic material and scanned media, makes the possibilities endless with sophisticated results. This is a course accessible to all levels of expertise.
Cost: £ 185, including materials, lunch and refreshments.
Time: 10am - 4pm each day with an hour for lunch.

25th August - 1st September (seven days) Printing on the Ardtornish Estate, West Highlands
Printing set in an impressive Scottish manor house cum castle. We shall be taking the workshop to Scotland, where teaching will form 2.5 hours a day over six days (on the first Saturday we arrive and settle in). With open access to the equipment at other times of the day depending on ability, tuition will cover many areas of printing including etching, drypoint, relief printing and collagraph. The stunning landscape of the West Highlands and the estate of Ardtornish will be a great visual stimulus, with botanic gardens and sea loch to enjoy and gain inspiration from. There are double rooms and family rooms - booking of single rooms is limited. James will be taking his sailing dinghy, so those who can sail can go out on the lochs. If you are interested in this wonderful opportunity, please express your interest as soon as possible so that rooms can be booked.

Cost of complete study trip: £ 375
(Course £ 195, accommodation and food £ 180).

7th, 8th, 9th September Lithography with James Hill and Fiona Thomas
Stone and photo-plate lithography will be taught on this course. For beginners and those with some knowledge, it is an ideal course to get to grips with this mysterious and vexing form of printing. I was seduced by lithography when I first started printing, when it seemed like magic and led me into the world of printmaking. It is a form of printing ideal for people who enjoy drawing and water colour.
Cost: £ 185, including materials, lunch and refreshments.
Time: 10am - 4pm each day with an hour for lunch.
